Timing

When's the best time to build a pool in Arizona?

The cliché answer is spring. The real answer is September through January. Here's why most Phoenix pool builders won't tell you that.

The Phoenix pool calendar

From February onward, the Valley books out. Every homeowner who saw a 90°F February day calls a pool company at once. By March, lead times balloon — and so do quotes, because every builder is full.

Why fall and winter beat spring

  • Faster permits. Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Mesa pool permit queues are shortest October–January.
  • Better pricing. Most reputable builders quote slightly more conservatively in peak season; off-season bids are leaner.
  • You swim Memorial Day. Start excavation in October and you're filling water before Easter.
  • Cooler crew = better work. 75°F install days produce better tile, coping, and deck work than 115°F July afternoons.

When NOT to start

Starting in March hoping to swim by Memorial Day rarely works out. Real pool timelines in the Valley run 10–16 weeks from contract to first swim, with another 2–4 weeks of permit lead time before that. Late starts mean you pay for a pool you can't fully enjoy until September.

The strategic play

Get on the books in September or October. Permits clear by November, dig in late November or early December, and your pool is finished and warm by April. You also lock in pre-season pricing before the spring rush.
